Close to home is a demographic and emotional space that we can embrace and cherish and sometimes it is a place we push to escape through travel, movies, books, music and even paintings. It can be a practical and mystical location at the same time. I have been rigorously interrogating what ‘close to home’ means to me at this specific time and in this specific location. I will share a link to some of this exploration in my Creative Potager art journal below a little later. First, we will have a chance to take in two recent small painting studies as part of this new series.

“Memories of Mornings” by the Studio Window by Terrill Welch, 10 x 8 inch acrylic on linen board.

**Artist notes:** So many morning seated in the studio window with coffee and breakfast just like this morning. I worked from memory though there are references. My attention drifted from what I might be reading to the dark savoured bitterness of the coffee then over to where the rising sun is catching the far hill in the valley. The fields are cut and dry and a cool breeze is coming in the window next to the one I am sitting beside. There is a precious sense of optimism swinging on the branches of the fir trees. I sigh and blink my way into the day. This quick sketch is a brief reminder of something that as of yet has no words other than the importance of waking up.

“Arbutus in August” by Terrill Welch, 10 x 8 inch acrylic on linen board.

**Artist notes:** I focus on catching the full range of my sensory experience in the small plein air painting from the light breeze to breaking waves, seagulls squawking and the feel of the sun on my shoulders and the dryness of the acrylic paint on my brush as it contacts the linen surface. There is a powdery dry feeling mingling with the coolness from the sea to the mid August air. I linger after packing up. The moment is pleasant and yet holds a warning, like splitting the winter’s wood on a warm summer’s day. That freshness foreshadows the coming of shorter days and brisk winds and heavy rains. This arbutus tree will be ready and so will I.

This is a quick plein air painting sketch at Georgina Point on Mayne Island in British Columbia, Canada and the second reference work for my current “Close to Home” series. The range of brushstrokes are impressionist in a painting language that I find best facilitates my sensory conversation with nature.

These two new works (along with detail images, digital room views and prices) add to this series that also includes two recent arbutus tree paintings that can be viewed at:

[Defining “Close to Home” as a focus within my nature-centric, reparative painting practiceMonday, 17 August 2026 “Close to home” at first, brings up familiarity, safety and comfort. It is where I live my daily life most of the time. **WHAT HAS SOLD**

I am pleased to let you know that five “Terrill Welch Paintings” have been sold this past week from the Terrill Welch Gallery Pod and they are now off to new homes in British Columbia, Canada. I have listed these paintings below so that we can wish them well after having one last engagement. We shall start with two still life oil paintings…

SOLD - “Between Blue and Gold” by Terrill Welch, 14 x 11 inch walnut oil on linen over birch wood.

**Artist notes:** A compressed peony invites us in while feathery wisps of devil-in-the-bush flowers gather around weighted by a deep purple pincushion flower that is then harmonizes into a whole with vines of sweet peas. It is close to the final week of June and just past the longest day of the year. Ever so briefly we pause.

SOLD - “Wine Vase Pears Lemons and Blood Oranges” by Terrill Welch, 12 x 16 inch oil on canvas.

**Artist notes:** Though it is winter, the oranges are fine and colour is an emotional necessity.

Next, we have three west coast landscape paintings that are off to various walls in homes where they will be deeply appreciated.

SOLD - “Leaning Over Bennett Bay” by Terrill Welch, 10 x 8 inch oil on gessobord.

**Artist notes:** Leaning over Bennett Bay, the Arbutus tree calmly invites me into its view. Stay a while it seems to say just as a raven calls over head and forest birds chatter in the branches. So I do.

SOLD - “Red Line 01” by Terrill Welch, 24 x 18 in h walnut oil on canvas.

**Artist Notes:** These Arbutus trees are in trouble. There is a good chance they won’t survive at least in this location over the next twenty years. I am baring witness, keeping a record, standing with them in their suffering. The path has widened over another dry summer from thousands of tromping shoes. I wonder if these fellow walkers see what I see. Dried grasses are carried away on a hot breeze, revealing shards of naked stones. For the fourth year in a row, the drought has been long, too long. Stressed, the trees will be susceptible to various kinds of native fungus that turn their leaves black and branches are forces to die back. Sometimes whole trunks become standing grey skeletons. These are simple observations that leave a red line reminder in an otherwise blissful landscape. I have chosen to add that red line.

I remind you that I paint first and foremost for me. I could paint stunning landscapes for the next twenty years. But, in a way, they would be a lie, denying the pain and lump in my throat as I walk amongst the trees. Right now, such paintings of bliss seem irresponsible, an unacceptable personal denial. So I went to work to find a more honest way to render my experiences. This is a start - “Red Line 01”.

SOLD - Storm Coming Through by Terrill Welch, 24 x 36 inch oil on canvas.

**Artist notes:** Winds howl as the rain slaps driving mist across the landscape. It takes fortitude, girt and a bit of foolishness to be out on a day like this. With shoulders hunched I yell against the beastly day with no effect. The sounds are carried away, across the water, through the trees – gone, like the day that will end in nothing more than a short, perpetual early dawn. Such is a winter storm in January off the southwest coast of Canada.

**FINAL THOUGHTS**

I should clarify that there has been no special savings promotion during this past week that would have prompted these sales. The universe just seems to have decided that it was time for them to be on their way… and off they went!

I am grateful for the ongoing support from art collectors as they take these works into their stewardship. This is a challenging time for many artists and small businesses (or businesses of any size) in Canada and I am ever-so-thankful for my network of Canadian art collectors but it is more than just Canada. During this past year, I have sold paintings to American art collectors who came to Canada and picked up their paintings from the gallery and a painting sold that was shipped into Europe for an international fundraiser. The international Opulent Art Gallery representing my work is headquartered in England. The StorytellART gallery based in Victoria that has newly begun representing my work also has an international reach. Without this national and international base of art collectors, serious fans and gallery representatives, it would be much more difficult right now.

Sunflowers from my daughter and family for my birthday week. These are from their garden and make a dramatic addition to our kitchen table with one of my large seafloor paintings in the background. Photograph by Terrill Welch.

On this day, that is my birthday, I am pensive as I look soberly about what these next few years hold for Canada and the world. As an artist, I am also a small business. I will be looking for ways to offer further preferential opportunities for first, Canadian art collectors and then, European and United Kingdom art collectors. In addition, I seek to keep, limited as they will be for now, options for my equally cherished United States art collectors and serious fans. Every “Terrill Welch painting” that finds a home is a patronage and stewardship for my artwork that I treasure and deeply appreciate. None of this is going to be particularly straightforward or easy. Remain calm. Be kind… and never mistake kindness for weakness or acquiescence. Stay tuned as I work out what I can do. In the meantime, viewing my paintings online is an accessible gift to everyone around the world who has access to the internet. Enjoy!…

And, I love to hear from you in comments and personal emails. As humans, our expression of our humanity is within our control. We must take full personal responsibility and be accountable for this, even more than usual during times like these. Did you notice that I didn’t mention the escalating US - Canada trade war even once? 😉

Warm regards,

Terrill 👩‍🎨🎨❤️
