A thirty-four year old painting left under the arm of an admirer around 20 years ago. I was contacted by the current art collector this past week wanting to know more about the painting. Another new painting “Sea of Thoughts” has been jury selected into a large Landscape/Cityscape virtual exhibition in Lyon, France. Meanwhile, I will take two paintings to a local Arts on Mayne members show in a few hours for the opening and masquerade ball this evening. Needless to say ideas for paintings are being considered but no actual painting has happened this week. Instead, I will share a few photographs from my painting trip that have been tucked into my references folder for consideration later on. Without further explanation, let’s begin!

**THIRTY-FOUR YEAR OLD PAINTING RESURFACES AFTER TWENTY YEARS**

Please note: this story is shared with the art collector’s permission.

“Tide Pool” left under the arm of an appreciative admirer around twenty years ago, never to be seen by the artist again, until now. This watercolour painting, on a quarter sheet of heavy archers watercolour paper completed in 1992 and professionally framed before my first solo show in 1995, showed up in the private message box for the Terrill Welch Gallery business page.

Randy Ovington asks “I got a painting. How much is it worth?”

The image is blurry and the angle contorted but I knew which painting it was. Without replying, I go up to the loft and pull the hardcopy recorded for that first show off of my bookshelf. My mother had taken images of all of my paintings that I had completed at that time because she was the only one with a good film camera and I couldn’t afford to take them to a professional photographer. I quickly flipped through the pages and found the painting in question.

Record Album page from 1995-1998 of Terrill Welch watercolour paintings.

I didn’t know enough to get the work photographed before it was framed and didn’t collect sizes of it unframed or framed. It was part of the first 30 or 40 paintings I had done over the previous 20 years and I just thought I would remember or never need to know. Thirty-four years and over 600 paintings later, I know to do a much better job of recordkeeping. But it is what is and we will have to make do with what we have.

I reply to Randy “Oh my, where did you get it from?”

I knew Randy was not the person who had left with the painting under his arm twenty years ago and I was curious. He had acquired it in an estate sale in Parksville, British Columbia. More images were exchanged the next day and I was able to determine that the painting was without a doubt mine and still in its original frame. Where the painting has been between when it left my studio and when it was discovered in the estate sale is a mystery that has not yet revealed itself.

I have created an inventory number for it and added it to my public inventory records with as much information as we know about it, including a digital copy of an image from the photograph in my hardcopy records by itself and framed.

Framed image of “Tide Pool” by Terrill Welch, approximately 11 x15 inch watercolour on 1/4 sheet arches paper, photographed under glass.

This is my first seafloor painting that was completed 32 years before my current series. Here is my introductory or artist statement for that first show “Images of Moments” in the Allegro Framing & Design Accents that opened, Saturday, November 4, 1995:

*My art is a love of colour and a desire for contentment, embraced in rural experience and feminist thought. I acknowledge humble vulnerability as I dare to believe I can move my inner perceptions into visibility and enjoyment for others. Many thanks to those who guide, challenge and support me in the complexities of SELF.*

Note: the size of the unframed painting is approximate. The visible portion of the work in the frame is approximately 10 x 14 inches.

And my online gallery record for this work:

Randy has let me know that he is willing to consider selling the painting. If you are interested in the work let me know and I will connect you to him to further discuss a purchase.

We are delighted to announce that the **Landscape/Cityscape Juried Virtual Exhibition 2026** is now online and open to visitors at theNEW ROAD 2 ART virtual gallery.

Because this exhibition is large and organized alphabetically by first name, in four separate virtual gallery spaces, “Sea of Thoughts” is in the fourth gallery and the second room of that space. Some of you will remember when I used this virtual room space to show work a number of years ago. It has improved with time and is much smoother and easier to navigate now. Take a moment and read the instructions pop-up top right before you begin and you should be fine. This is a large international show that has been rigorously curated by the jury with a wide range of considered work. I strongly encourage you to take the time to explore all three spaces. Click or tap on the work you want to know more about by opening the “i” at the top right. This is your chance to view and engage with current landscape and cityscape art from around the world. **The exhibition is open from October 7 to 27, 2026\.**

This is the painting and please do drop by and see it in the context of this international virtual exhibition.

**PHOTOGRAPHY REFERENCES FROM** **SOUTHWEST COAST VANCOUVER ISLAND PAINTING TRIP**

I will do my best to keep this section as brief as possible and only include the highlights for you.

The sound of rolling round flattened stones in the surf is my auditory clue to the southwest coast of Vancouver Island. The clear green cold water that so often appears is a visual anchor.

Even looking at these images I can feel the cold wind off the water and hear the stones rolling with each outgoing wave.

The coastline is shaped by both sun and storms but it also has a persistent wind that I remember from living in Pedder Bay from 1999 to 2007\.

French Beach Coastline by Terrill Welch, photograph Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

Fog rests at the bottom of the far Olympic Mountains in the United States and seems to creep across the water to greet us.

We spend part of a day bouncing over heaved pavement and washboard to reach Port Renfrew but it was a beautiful drive and a great day Complete with surfers and people fishing during a salmon run at Pacheedaht Beach.

Pacheedaht Beach near Port Renfrew by Terrill Welch, photograph 30 September 2026.

I plein air painted on this beach in 1990 - 1991 and very near here was where I took the reference image for the “Tide Pool” painting completed in 1992\. I have been back a few times in between but not often. It is much busier now even on the shoulder season.

On our final day we took a detour over to East Sooke Park which has been gentrified but no one told the cougar whose close proximity and siting had brought conservation officers and closed the trail above the beach. David waited at the car while I went to the beach to take photographs with a watchful eye high and low for a big tawny cat.

This park is very near Pedder Bay where I mentioned I use to live. Back then, it was a quiet park even on weekends. Now it seems to be well used everyday if the week and all year around. I think it was “discovered” by Victoria and tourists during Covid and now is a favourite beach and hiking area on the southern part of Vancouver Island.

I miss the wildness of this area but totally understand and appreciate that more people are spending time outdoors.

**UNTIL NEXT TIME**

I have been enjoying the luxury or puttering for a few hours each day during this past week. I pulled the tomato plants up and took the ollas out of the raised beds. I read random articles and discussed politics with my son around the kitchen table. I moved a new canvas onto the easel to start and laid “Harbouring Hope” on its back so it is ready to paint the edges. I read on the wood bench at the edge of the garden in the hazy autumn sun. I reread my MA Fine Art art journal posts before publishing them publicly on Creative Potager. Besides my son and his wife visiting overnight on the weekend, there have been phone calls and text exchanges with family that I treasure. These simple ordinary things form a rich foundation in my life and painting practice. I wish for you to have similar experiences to fortify other more challenging experiences.

All the best as always,

Terrill 👩‍🎨🎨❤️
