A Brush with Life - Issue #123 Early Spring and the Anticipated Arrival of Blossoms

Very soon there will be plum and magnolia blossoms ringed with crocuses and daffodils combined with that earthy richness of freshly turned soil. This time is truly only days away for Mayne Island. Our cover images was taken on March 17th last year. As gardeners rattle their newly arrived seed packages, I am sorting my plein air gear and reviewing gaps in my currently available small works. There are no small acrylic painting sketches still available of Arbutus trees for one. I shall have to fix this soon. In the meantime, there is a brand new 20 x 16 Arbutus tree painting that will be first unveiled in the next issue of “Terrill Welch by herself." We will give you a wee hint today with a shiny wet detail or two.

And one more for good meassure...

This reminds me, our Introductory Offer to “Terrill Welch by herself” at 50% savings ends March 17, 2023. If this is something you are considering, do it now! Here is the direct link…  https://terrill-welch.ghost.io/introductory-offer

In this issue of "A Brush with Life" we have an introduction to the first group show of the year "Beyond" in ISLAND TIME ART. There is also a recent public release of a Terrill Welch painting sketch and we will cover what has sold and what is in the news. We highlight the Made on Mayne Spring Tour for April 7th and 8th which is held on Easter weekend this year.

NEW GROUP SHOW - "BEYOND" AT ISLAND TIME ART

The most enjoyable way to get a feel for this show is in the one minute video below that is complete with what is a reasonable replication of a ferry whistle in the background...

Of course one of the paintings in this show has already sold, and we will get to that shortly. We have added this Spring painting below in its place.

From 10 - 5 Thursday to Monday, February 7, 2023 to April 17, 2023 the ISLAND TIME ART room at 492 Dalton Rd. on Mayne Island will present “Beyond” with original paintings of various sizes by Jody Waldie, Jennifer Peers, Glenda King, Maeva Lightheart and Terrill Welch. In this diverse show, most of the paintings are slightly beyond the usual expressions for each painter with many leaning towards abstraction and one towards extreme realism. These works are outliers or works from the margins which are being given space to be seen and appreciated. These artworks can also be purchased online from our private viewing room.

RECENT RELEASE

After its private viewing release in the most recent issue to "Terrill Welch by herself" paid subscribers, this new seals painting sketch is now (or rather was) publicly available for your consideration.

"Seals on the Rocks" by Terrill Welch, 8 x 10 inch acrylic painting sketch

Artist notes: The high tides bring the seals close to shore at Oyster Bay. Their sleek shapes blend into the rocks sometimes going unnoticed until they move. Worthy of a quick sketch just for fun.

WHAT HAS SOLD

We would like to take a moment to celebrate and congratulate the art collectors of “Sandstone Serpents at the Entrance of Active Pass” by Terrill Welch who purchased this work from the ISLAND TIME ART room with the assistance of Vania William in Dragonfly.

SOLD - “Sandstone Serpents at the Entrance of Active Pass” by Terrill Welch

This new very contemporary work joins two other recently purchased paintings by these art collectors.

The second work that has sold is the new release. It sold the very next day after it was shared on social media last Friday. Since I shared the original image above, we will share it here with its big fat red "SOLD" banner.

Our special thanks and congratulations to these art collectors as well.

IN THE NEWS

On occasion, I open up a regional article only to be faced with my own painting. My first curious thought is usually - how did this get there? In this case it was a cycling trip from Salt Spring Island to Mayne and a great article about a local island hopping adventure. I thought you might also like to have read…

UNTIL NEXT TIME

We close this issue with a few moments down visiting the sometimes wild Salish Seas. I love to get low and tuck in next to the salty water spray while the mud squishes up around my shoes. This is a time to be extremely cautious traversing any of the sandstone and logs. But, if one is careful, it is still possible to get close to the water. So until next time, let’s close with just a few moments by the water.

The waves have been kicking up a bit for sure.

I managed to get a few great rough sea images on this day but this one is a first to successfully frame this view from Seaview looking over to the coastal mountains below. I thought you might like to have a look. It was one gorgeous but crispy photoshoot day I tell you!

Still, even after almost 16 years of poking around, it is always worth it to see if I can find something new. Then there are our also infrequent views of wild midnight blue seas. I can never seem to get enough of these kinds of days!

Then a range of greens roll up as the sun comes out.

In the next issue of “Terrill Welch by herself” I will share more images from this time and share the background story. Again, you are able to purchase your Introductory Offer with 50% savings to this paid subscription until March 17th at the link below.
https://terrill-welch.ghost.io/introductory-offer

I want to thank all those who have already purchased their subscription! I find it does offer a unique kind of writing and reading relationship that has more freedom and possibly intimacy to explore into my life as full-time artist. It is an honour and a gift at the same time. Your feedback has been encouraging and I look forward to continuing this publication for a long while.

If you are interested in simply viewing my finished art and the art news covered in  “A Brush with Life” then this free publication is perfect. If however, you like to follow me along on hikes, read stories from my painting adventures and from my life, along with getting first access to new paintings, then it will be worth the small fee even at full price after March 17, 2023 for the paid subscription to “Terrill Welch by herself”. This is truly the back stage pass to the life of this working artist. If you need help figuring out how to purchase your subscription, let me know and I will see what I can do.

Well, this is all for now and I wish you all the very best as we welcome Spring and enjoy our longer days.

Until bext time!

Terrill 😊🎨❤️
