A Brush with Life - Issue #124 West Coast Sea Escape

To begin, we have a new solo show “West Coast Seas Escape” with sixteen of my seascape paintings in the gallery pod for you. These specific works were chosen to accompany one of my most challenging paintings - “One World”. If you love to visit with the sea in all kinds of weather, this show is for you. Today is also the beginning of the Made on Mayne Spring Tour that runs from 10 - 4 for both Friday and Saturday April 7th and 8th. The “One World” painting will remain in the online viewing room during this time but will be replaced in the gallery pod by “Rolling Up on the Strait of Georgia” for the duration of the tour so that a visitor doesn’t get caught off guard by the content. We have had mixed weather the last month but I did get out plein air painting. I think we will start this issue with these adventures and see where it takes us…

However, before you slip off there to view each painting in detail, let’s take a quick browse through the show…

We slipped out to the gallery pod early this morning to make sure everything is ready for your visit.

The seascape painting “China Beach in Late February” on the top right is new and this is its first time being in a show. China Beach is on the southwest tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

We are thrilled to have the large 40 x 60 inch seascape painting of Active Pass anchoring this show across the back of the gallery pod. The city seascape to its right is a newer painting interpreting a location in the Victoria B.C. area.

Many have said it reminds them of the South of France.

City Summer by the Sea by Terrill Welch

This is just how lovely it can be here in British Columbia sometimes.

We look forward to your visits both online and in person to enjoy these seascape paintings that are showing until May 17, 2023 in our unique gallery pod in the woods.

REGIONAL ART EXHIBITION The Arts on the Islands 2023 exhibition will be available to view online April 28-June 30. It features work by 67 Southern Gulf Island artists from the island communities of…

This exhibition will include paintings by ISLAND TIME ART room artists Glenda King, Maeva Lightheart, Jody Waldie and Terrill Welch. Unfortunately, Jennifer Peers was not elegible to participate in this exhibition because the criteria was restricted to those artists living full or part time on the Southern Gulf Islands. Though we still think of Jennifer as a Mayne Island artist, she moved to Victoria a couple of years ago and makes a galant effort to transport her work back and forth to continue to show her work with the Terrill Welch Gallery. We know that Jennifer is celebrating with us and for us!

PLEIN AIR PAINTING IN THE JAPANESE MEMORIAL GARDEN

It is one of my most favourite days of the year when warm sunshine circles around the bowl of our Mayne Island Japanese Memorial Garden. Squinting in the bright sunlight, I placed my easel at the edge of path while keeping me on the gravel to save the damp ground from my back and forth movements.

The early afternoon slipped away in heavenly sounds of birds and young children being guided through the garden by their parents and grandparents.

It is a good kind of rough and ready day this one!

"Spring in Japanese Memorial Garden" by Terrill Welch, 8 x 10 inch plein air acrylic on gessobord painting sketch is under first consideration by a paid subscriber to "Terrill Welch by herself." If it does become available, I will let you know... or you can let me know in advance if you are interested.

Artist notes: Warm sunshine circles the sheltered bowl of the Japanese Memorial Garden on Mayne Island in British Columbia. As I painted, the plum blossoms open up just a little more. I can think of no better place to be than placing loose brushstrokes on a yellow grounded gessobord.
