A Brush with Life - Issue #125 Following Joy

This past week, these two Terrill Welch paintings are winged their way to a special home in Alberta, Canada. With gratitude, we offer congratulations to the art collector who is celebrating a milestone as she reaches towards her vision! When we asked our art collector about her selection of these two paintings, she replied that she was following her joy. Doesn’t that make you smile? Joy is such a full body experience and it is something that we know when we see it both in people and in animals. Joy is also contagious and seems to spillover onto and into anything within its sphere. With our southwest coast weather finally warming up I feel that abundance of early summer joy that comes with the change in the smell of sea and in the forest as the resin in the fir trees warms and the foliage burst out on the maple trees.

WHAT HAS SOLD

SOLD - Wabi Sabi Alley in Venice by Terrill Welch, 20 x 16 inch oil on canvas.

Sold - Wabi Sabi Alley in Venice by Terrill Welch

Artist notes: Finding a quiet alley in Venice is not as easy as one might think. But over somewhere around the big fish market and then just a few more twist and turns and we are here. Window shutters slap open to the late morning while the clicking of shoes echo into the distance. The warmth softly radiates back to us off of the brick walls where the deep shade is still cool and welcoming. Venetia Italia, how many have wander into this wabi sabi alley of yours?

SOLD - Future Fragments Study by Terrill Welch, 10 x 8 inch acrylic and oil on gessobord.

Sold - Future Fragments Study by Terrill Welch

Artist notes: I walked and wondered about what will remain as future fragments to rebuild upon? Will there be another fragile sense of wholeness and interwoven harmony? What did it feel like then? What does it feel like now? Are any bits reusable?

Here are the two paintings together shown in the Terrill Welch Gallery Pod…

We wish a heartfelt thank you to the art collector and many years of viewing enjoyment!

REGIONAL SOUTHERN GULF ISLANDS ART SHOW

If you happen to be in Sidney, British Columbia, there is a Regional Southern Gulf Islands show at the ArtSea Gallery at 9565 5th Street and the show will be available for viewing 10 – 4 every day until May 11th.

There is work in this show by our gallery artists Glenda King, Maeva Lightheart, Jody Waldie and Terrill Welch. If I had taken this image from the other end of the display, it would have been easier to see Glenda, Maeva and Jody's paintings but you get the idea.

Also, the whole diverse regional show can be viewed online at:

Enjoy browsing either in person or online. On May 11th, the Mayne Island artwork in this show will be moved to the Mayne Island Library and shown until June 30th. We offer a heartfelt congratualtion to all of the award winners and a huge thank you to Deborah Strong and the multi-islands teams of volunteers and to the judges who had a challenging job making selections. It is a great show that is beautifully curated and hung that does a fine job of presenting the strength of artwork in the Southern Gulf Islands.

The night sky offers beautiful views of our connection with nature and it is something I hope to paint more often. These two are views from inside cozy places looking out. The first is of the moon as seen through my bedroom window. The seconded is the stars from inside the car on our last ride on the Mayne Queen ferry. Both of these are added to the “Thriving in Place” private viewing room even though they were painted before I formally started focusing on this theme. These two paintings were like the seeds that were planted for this current narrowed of focus.

Artist notes: The title of the painting comes from one of my favourite poems which has an equally favourite story to go with it. The thief left it behind:…

PRICE INCREASE COMING IN MAY

Are you ready!? As you might expect, after two years of holding painting prices steady and sales still continuing at a good clip and with costs of supplies and shipping having succumbed to “sticky” inflation, prices will increase for Terrill Welch painting sometime in May or early June. So far this year, I completed and released six paintings and four paintings from my inventory have already found homes with art collectors. And there you have it! If there is something you are considering right now, let me know in the next few days and we will make sure you can purchase at our current prices. I will do my best to "sharpen my pencil" to keep the increase as modest as possible. I promise!

OVER 12,000 VIEWS IN JUST TWO MONTHS

Social media is a fickle host and its logic can really never be predicted. That said, a recent videl of the painting process for “Letting Go of the Sky” has gained the attention of YouTube's algorithm. So we thought you might also want a direct link to view it for yourself. It was first shared with paid subscribers of “Terrill Welch by herself” when it was published in March however, it has always been a publicly accessible video.

NEW TERRILL WELCH ART COLLECTIONS

We have two new art collections of Terrill Welch paintings inspired by our Mayne Island parks. We thought you might like to take a browse and learn more about the parks and the paintings they inspired.

The first is "Inspired by Saint John Point Park Reserve on Mayne Island" and currently has 22 paintings in the collection.

Collection Summary: As a landscape painter I have places that I revisit over time finding something new to brush onto a canvas for board. One of these places is the Saint John Point Park Reserve. These paintings range from 2018 up until today. I hope you enjoy the variety and exploration of this unique ecosystem located within Coast Salish Territory. Thanks and recognition to the Mayne Island Conservancy and the family who owned this property for working so hard towards its park status. Learn more about this 26 hectare waterfront park reserve that was established in 2017 on the Capital Regional District website.

The second is "Inspired by Edith Point Conservation Area on Mayne Island" and currently has 27 paintings that go back all the way to 2011 in this collection.

Collection Summary: This 35 hectares of seaside trails has long been enjoyed by local Mayne Island residents at the welcome of the Graves family who have stewarded the lands since the 1990’s. Now, with the hard work of many including the Graves family, the Mayne Island Conservancy and the National Conservancy of Canada this delicate ecosystem in Coast Salish territory will be preserved. Edith Point has inspired many paintings over the years but most often the specific location was not shared due to it being private land where I had special access as a Mayne Island community member. Now, with its new conservation status, it feels right to share these paintings as a body of work. Learn more on the Nature Conservancy Canada website.

We will be putting together a couple of more of these park collections in the near future. Let us know what you think. Were these a useful and interesting way to view the paintings?

UNTIL NEXT TIME

We finally have some awesome weather and sun-kissed noses! We have enjoyed these last few days with an overnight in Sidney to got to the Regional art Show opening on the weekend and taking in an early morning walk along the manicured waterfront.

I do have one more painting that will become available in the next few days after the edges are painting and a final high resolution photograph is taken. It is the perfect transition from spring to summer.

Released soon! Room view - “Spring in the Neighbourhood” by Terrill Welch, 20 x 30 inches.

Other than this, I am considering a new painting looking way up an Arbutus tree and other smaller plein air works. There is always something brewing in my imagination and waiting for its turn at the easel!

Great Blue Heron taking flight in Reef Bay by Terrill Welch

We wish you all the best and some lovely weather for hiking, gardening, picnics and just general enjoyment. I hope to hear from you soon either with a visit to the Gallery Pod or online.

May your dreams become visions that you fulfill!

Warm regards,

Terrill 🎨❤
