A Brush with Life - Issue #130 Pockets of Silence

Are you wondering where I found those pockets of silence I keep talking about? I can appreciate that it doesn’t really seem plausible. However, the truth is that silent contemplation is often followed by high levels of creativity and energy.
A Brush with Life - Issue #130 Pockets of Silence

Within silence is a contemplation propelling bold action. This is the kind of spaciousness that has been offered over the winter on our small southern gulf island these past few months. The actions that have followed recently are indeed bold! They include accepting an offer to be the Mayne Island Resort island artist in residence and a request to be represented by the international Opulent Art Gallery out of the United Kingdom in partnership with ARTSY. We shall start with the second first!

OPULENT ART GALLERY AND ARTSY REPRESENTATION

For those that have been following my work for a long time, you might remember that I have had a profile on ARTSY since 2018 through NYC Gallery and Gallery 104 in New York City and then for two years the Terrill Welch Gallery was also hosted on ARTSY. However, this is the first time my work has been represented outside of North America… which means all the prices are in pounds. Now how cool is this!?

Currently, there are twelve paintings available but there will eventually be twice this many paintings represented by the Opulent Art Gallery and ARTSY. We think this option will be of particular interest to United Kingdom and European serious fans and art collectors of “Terrill Welch paintings”. Here is the direct link to have a look for yourself:

MAYNE ISLAND RESORT ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

My apologies to “Terrill Welch by herself” subscribers and social media followers who already have this scoop. However, I must share again! Many of our quarterly “A Brush with Life” newsletter enthusiasts are still awaiting this latest development. Thank you in advance for your patience if you are already in the know!

Here is a quick summary glimpse of a few of the paintings that are already up on the walls in the lobby of the Mayne Island Resort …

I am so glad that I said “yes” when I was asked if I would like to be the island “artist in residence” for the Mayne Island Resort. The intention is that my paintings will assist the new owners, Daryll and Janice Martin, towards the actualization of their vision for the resort.

There is a QR code on a label for each painting that takes guests and visitors to more information and a purchase link for each artwork. All inquiries and purchases are facilitated by the Terrill Welch Gallery and guests can continue their browsing of more of my work in the Terrill Welch Gallery Pod at 428 Luff Rd on Mayne Island if they wish. In addition, all paintings showing at the Mayne Island Resort are also available for online viewing and purchasing in a special private viewing room at:

Now how fun is this!? Do let me know if I can assist you in anyway at all with accessing this new possibility for viewing and purchasing the paintings.

WHAT HAS SOLD

Since our last quarter “A Brush with Life” newsletter three more paintings have sold making it a total of six sold so far in just the first quarter of 2024.

The first has gone to a special new home in New Jersey.

The second painting sold in a modified commission arrangement to a long time art collector and friend in British Columbia who traveled to spend a couple of days hiking and beach walking with me in between my plein air painting sessions and her work on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island. At the end of my first round plein air and study paintings, the art collector choice this painting to add to her art collection as it is a special memory of a place that we discovered for the first time together. Well, us and her three little dogs discovered it for the first together…

Hidden Waterfall Sombrio Beach by Terrill Welch

All in all it was a grand adventure and nice to share it with someone who loves doing some of the same things that I do.

The third painting has sold to significant art collectors in British Columbia.

Red Cabin in Miners Bay by Terrill Welch
Artist notes: Breaking clouds in January afternoon light push back against the hunched barn red cabin in Miners Bay. Details are few as my eye flutters back…

This couple has an amazing connection to my paintings, our home and to Mayne Island combined! So much so that in early February this year they asked if they could get married in our great room surrounded by my paintings.

The marriage commissioner came over from Galiano Island on this special February morning to officiate a small private ceremony.

David and I witnessed the couples commitments and their signing of the marriage license documents.

Now, with permission, I would like to present to you this most happy couple who come to visit Mayne Island and regularly stay at the Mayne Island Resort, hike island trails, have dinner at the Bennett Bay Bistro, look at paintings and frequently take on stewardship of new paintings that they add to their art collection.

We met this lovely couple over their interest in my paintings in 2018 after a few of years of connecting on Twitter where I was regularly posting new work at the time. That was their first of many visits to Mayne Island. Since then, as well as being serious art collectors, this couple, like many of my art collectors, have become friends with a kind of closeness that resembles chosen family.

We have had several art collectors come to celebrate their special birthdays amongst the paintings in the past few years. But this is our first wedding! David and I jokingly say, that is someone wants to deliver their baby amongst the paintings we might have to say no but birthdays and intimate sharing of wedding vows we can do with ease and pleasure for our art collectors.

SAY “YES” TO COLLECTING ORIGINAL ART - it might be easier than you think.

SEVEN TIPS FOR COLLECTING ORIGINAL ART ON A BUDGET
We do not have to be rich to purchase original art. It is possible to go beyond just what we love and speculating to purchasing original artwork with knowledge and confidence within our budget.

This article has been available to only paying “Terrill Welch by herself” subscribers for the past year. We are now releasing it publicly. If you are a serious fan of “Terrill Welch paintings” but not sure if you will ever be able to add one to your art collection, then this article is for you!

NEW RELEASES

Though there is has been plenty of silence and contemplation, the brushes have also taking on surface after surface leading to the public release of six new paintings since the last quarterly issue, five of which are still available. plus, there are three or four more paintings that are finished and waiting for their presentation first to “Terrill Welch by herself” paid subscribers on the third Friday in April. In the meantime, here are five new works that you can consider right now…

WATCH FOR A SEPARATE EMAIL ONLY SPECIAL OFFER

Stay tuned! I have special email only offer coming that will last for 20 days at the beginning of Summer. I just want you to be ready for it. I am going to include commission requests this time with this special offer which I rarely do just because of the pressure it adds to my painting practice. But I am feeling flexible this year and so let’s see what happens.  However, I will only be able to accept a few commissions. If this is something you are considering get your request in early! My hope is that I will have well over 130 available paintings in my inventory for you to choose from. Feel free to meander through the online gallery and the physical places the paintings are showing. I will include all the details in the email special offer but you are welcome to ask me questions ahead of time.

UNTIL NEXT TIME

Well, I bet you’re wondering where I found those pockets of silence I keep talking about. I can appreciate that it doesn’t really seem plausible. However, the truth is that silent contemplation is often followed by high levels of creativity and energy.

There are the obvious moments down at the beach…

Or plein air painting on a calm early morning…

Or searching for the right yellow in Vincent Van Gogh’s sun for a painting quote…

Or a rainy morning with coffee in bed looking out the window…

There is also another less obvious location for silent contemplation and that is on our inside and it can happen anytime and anywhere. It happens when we release the brain chatter to focus on nothing more than our sensory observation, without judgement or expectation. It can be fleeting or sustained for a considerable length of time. Either is enough. Take what is on offer with gratitude and set an intention to notice the next moment and opportunity.

This is what I want to leave us with until next time. A freshness that has soft edges which blossom into full vitality. It is Spring after all. A time of awakening.

Until next time and a special welcome to our new subscriber!
